Throughout its history, IOC PAS researchers have contributed to major developments in organic chemistry, including the Achmatowicz reaction, vicarious nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen, new catalysts for olefin metathesis, methods for corrole synthesis and computer-assisted planning of multistep organic syntheses.
The Institute continues to combine this scientific tradition with emerging approaches in sustainable chemistry, photocatalysis, functional materials and artificial intelligence-assisted molecular design.
Five IOC PAS researchers have received the Foundation for Polish Science Prize, widely regarded as Poland’s most prestigious scientific distinction:
Mieczysław Mąkosza, Karol Grela, Daniel Gryko, Bartosz Grzybowski and Dorota Gryko.
IOC PAS will serve as the principal research base for all 15 MATERIALIZE fellows. Each researcher will join one of participating research groups and carry out an original project under the guidance of an experienced Principal Investigator.

The Institute of Organic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (IOC PAS) is a leading research institute based in Warsaw, Poland. Established in 1964, it conducts fundamental and applied research in organic chemistry and related fields, while training researchers at doctoral and postdoctoral level.

MATERIALIZE fellows will have access to modern laboratories and specialist research infrastructure supporting the full research process — from molecular design and synthesis to structural, photophysical and computational analysis.
The infrastructure available at IOC PAS includes:
NMR spectroscopy;
high-resolution mass spectrometry and chromatography;
single-crystal X-ray diffraction;
UV–Vis–NIR absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy;
circular dichroism and circularly polarised luminescence spectroscopy;
equipment for electrosynthesis and electroanalysis (potentiostats IKA, Biologic);
photochemical and mechanochemical equipment;
gloveboxes and systems for reactions under controlled conditions;
high-performance computational resources.
The Institute’s central analytical facilities and specialised equipment available within individual research groups allow fellows to combine multiple methods within a single interdisciplinary project.
