A personalised path to research leadership

 

MATERIALIZE provides a structured yet flexible training programme designed to support scientific independence and prepare fellows for leadership roles in academia, industry and other research-based sectors.

 

Each fellow will follow an individual development path combining project-specific scientific training, transferable-skills development and career planning. Training activities will be tailored to the fellow’s research project, previous experience and professional ambitions.

 

 

Flexible individual training

 

In addition to the four core events, fellows will be able to select activities corresponding to the needs identified in their Career Development Plans.

These may include:

  • specialist scientific courses;

  • external professional-development workshops;

  • national and international conferences;

  • complementary research visits;

  • training provided by academic or industrial partners;

  • grant-writing, innovation and career-development activities.

 

Research and training budget

 

Each fellowship includes a dedicated budget of EUR 1,200 per fellowship* month for eligible research, training and networking costs.

 

Subject to programme and institutional rules, the budget may support:

 

  • reagents and research materials;

  • specialist equipment and services;

  • scientific and professional training;

  • conference participation;

  • research visits and international collaboration;

  • dissemination and Open Access publication.

 

*It won’t be part of a fellow's salary, but part of the project's budget managed by the fellow.

 

International experience

 

International secondments complement the scientific and professional training offered by MATERIALIZE. Their structure, partner organisations and practical arrangements are described on a separate page.

Four core training events

All MATERIALIZE Fellows will participate in four programme-wide training events covering the areas outlined below:

Innovation, intellectual property and ethics

A Warsaw-based event covering intellectual property protection, patent strategies, innovation, business models and research ethics.

Research leadership and team management

A Warsaw-based event focused on leadership, project management, team development and competitive grant applications.

Industrial research and innovation

An industry-oriented event in Kraków, organised with Photo HiTech and SyVento, addressing process scale-up, nanoformulations and industrial R&D.

Scientific communication and societal impact

A Warsaw-based event developing skills in scientific communication, research policy, public engagement and communicating the societal relevance of research.

Training areas will include:

Research leadership and team management

Scientific decision-making, supervision, teamwork, leadership and conflict management.

Project planning and grant writing

Research planning, resource and risk management and the preparation of competitive funding proposals.

Intellectual property and innovation

Intellectual property protection, patent claims, research exploitation, innovation pathways and business-model development.

Open Science and research integrity

FAIR data principles, Open Access, responsible data management, research ethics and good scientific practice.

Scientific communication and public engagement

Academic presentations, concise research pitches, visual communication, media content and communication with non-specialist audiences.

Industry collaboration

Industrial research environments, knowledge transfer and effective cooperation between academic and commercial partners.

Career planning

Identification of professional opportunities and preparation for leadership positions in academic research, industrial R&D and other research-related sectors.

Transferable skills

 

The programme will also develop competencies needed to manage research, lead teams and build careers within and beyond academia.

Scientific training

 

Scientific training will be tailored to the requirements of each fellow’s project and delivered primarily within the selected host group at IOC PAS.

 

Depending on individual needs, it may include:

 

  • specialist laboratory and analytical techniques;

  • training in research methods relevant to the project;

  • seminars and scientific workshops;

  • access to advanced research infrastructure;

  • participation in conferences;

  • collaboration with researchers from other disciplines.

Individual Career Development Plan

Every fellow will prepare an individual Career Development Plan (CDP) within the first two months of the fellowship.

 

Developed in close consultation with the main scientific supervisor, the CDP will serve as a dynamic roadmap for the fellow’s scientific and professional development.

 

It will include:

 

  • scientific objectives and project milestones;

  • publication and dissemination plans;

  • technical and transferable skills to be developed;

  • internal and external training needs;

  • planned conferences and mobility activities;

  • short- and long-term career objectives;

  • research ethics and responsible research considerations.

 

The CDP will be reviewed annually and updated to reflect the progress of the research project, changing training needs and the fellow’s professional ambitions.
