Host research groups at IOC PAS
Each fellow joins a research group selected for its expertise and compatibility with the proposed project.
Your host research group
Your host research group will be your main scientific environment during the fellowship. It will provide access to laboratory space, research equipment, specialist knowledge and day-to-day scientific exchange.
Your supervisor will support the development and implementation of your research plan, discuss scientific progress and help identify the methods, facilities and collaborations required at different stages of the project. Other members of the group will contribute complementary expertise and practical knowledge of local laboratory procedures.
MATERIALIZE fellows are expected to take intellectual ownership of their projects, make informed scientific decisions and develop increasing independence. At the same time, they will work collaboratively and benefit from the experience of researchers across IOC PAS and the wider MATERIALIZE network.
Safe and well-organised laboratory work
Health and safety are an integral part of research at IOC PAS. Before beginning experimental work, fellows complete the required occupational health and safety training and receive an introduction to the procedures applicable in their host laboratory.
Depending on the project and equipment used, additional workplace or instrument-specific training may be required. Fellows are expected to follow laboratory rules, risk assessments, chemical safety information and procedures for the responsible use of equipment and research materials.
Host-group members and technical staff provide practical guidance on laboratory organisation, sample handling, equipment use, procurement and the reporting of safety concerns.
Working at IOC PAS
A supportive research environment for ambitious and independent science
MATERIALIZE fellows will be employed by the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (IOC PAS) in Warsaw and conduct their projects within one of the participating host research groups.
The Institute combines specialist expertise in organic chemistry with shared analytical facilities, scientific services and the technical and administrative support needed to deliver ambitious interdisciplinary research.
Working at IOC PAS means becoming part of an active scientific community while taking intellectual ownership of your individual project. Throughout the fellowship, you will be supported by your scientific supervisor, host-group colleagues, specialist laboratory staff, administrative units and the MATERIALIZE programme team.
Scientific information and digital resources
Fellows can use the specialised IOC PAS scientific library, which provides access to books, journals and databases in chemistry, physics and related disciplines. The library also supports access to scientific information and offers workstations, scanning and copying facilities.
At the beginning of employment, fellows receive an institutional email account and access to the internal systems required for their work. The internal IOC PAS platform provides current regulations, administrative documents, templates, procedures and practical information for employees.
Technical assistance with institutional accounts, digital tools and IT infrastructure is available through the Institute’s IT support.
Support for international researchers
International fellows will receive practical onboarding information concerning employment at IOC PAS and the formalities connected with beginning work in Poland.
Depending on their nationality and individual circumstances, fellows may need to complete procedures relating to visas, legalisation of stay, registration, health insurance or other administrative requirements. Because these procedures are governed by current national regulations, fellows will receive up-to-date guidance and will be directed to the appropriate institutional and public services.

The onboarding process is designed to help each fellow understand how the Institute operates and begin work in an organised and safe way.
The initial onboarding process is expected to cover:

an IOC PAS identification and access card;

an institutional email account and access to internal systems;

introduction to the host group, workspace and laboratory procedures;

information about the use of shared equipment and analytical services;

guidance on procurement, project documentation and administrative procedures;

information about the support available from the MATERIALIZE team and IOC PAS units.
Detailed onboarding instructions will be provided directly to selected fellows before or at the beginning of their employment.
Scientific exchange and collaboration
IOC PAS brings together research groups working across complementary areas of organic and materials chemistry. This creates opportunities to exchange knowledge, combine different methods and develop collaborations beyond the fellow’s immediate host group.
Group meetings, scientific seminars, guest lectures, workshops and informal discussions allow fellows to present their results, receive feedback and become familiar with research conducted across the Institute.
MATERIALIZE will further connect fellows through shared training activities, cohort events and international cooperation. This broader scientific environment is intended to support interdisciplinary thinking and help fellows develop lasting professional networks.
